Does anyone else feel like you blinked and summer disappeared?
Every May, I breathe a sigh of relief, convinced life is finally about to slow down for a little while. Then somehow July comes and goes, and I realize things never really slowed down at all.
I can’t believe back-to-school season is already here, but ready or not, it’s time.
As moms, this season can feel incredibly overwhelming. Overnight, it seems like the to-do list doubles, and you’re left wondering how you’ll possibly get everything done before that first school bell rings.
As I’ve been thinking about this transition, I kept coming back to a few things that matter most to our family. And I thought, if they’re helping us navigate this season with a little more peace, maybe they’ll help your family too.
Relax
I know…that word alone might make you laugh.
It’s hard to relax when your child decides to hit a growth spurt at the worst possible time (although, let’s be honest, is there ever a good time?) and you have a mile-long list of school supplies, appointments, and errands waiting for you.
But hear me out.
These last few days of summer hold something special. Before schedules fill up and routines take over again, give yourself permission to soak in the time you have left together. Maybe the laundry waits another day. Maybe the checklist isn’t quite finished. Go get ice cream, have a movie night, spend the afternoon at the pool, or simply enjoy being together. Those moments will outlast anything left on your to-do list.
Make a Plan
The upcoming school year doesn’t have to catch you off guard.
Take a little time to map out the months ahead. I love knowing what’s coming up:teacher workdays, holidays, school breaks, and special events. Pull out a planner or open the calendar on your phone, then visit your school district’s website and add the important dates now.
Having a plan won’t eliminate every surprise, but it will help you feel more prepared and a lot less overwhelmed.
Savor the Little Moments
Even though our summer stayed busy, we still had something we don’t always get enough of: more time together.
Watching our children grow has a way of reminding us just how quickly these seasons pass. Before we know it, another summer has become another memory.
This year, we hung a giant summer bucket list on the wall in our living room. We filled it with simple, fun ideas and checked them off one by one throughout the season. Some adventures were big, most were small, but every one of them gave us something to look forward to.
We loved it so much that we’re thinking about making one for every season of the year.
Stop Playing Catch-Up
One of the greatest gifts you can give your family is the freedom to live life in a way that actually fits your family.
Maybe you love throwing elaborate back-to-school parties or hosting a big end-of-summer celebration. If that’s your thing, go all in!
But if it isn’t, don’t feel guilty.
Your children aren’t missing out because your family looks different from someone else’s. In fact, I’d argue they’re gaining something even better:a mom who is present, joyful, and living within her capacity instead of constantly chasing unrealistic expectations.
There is no prize for keeping up with everyone else. There is so much peace in embracing what works for your family.
As this new school year begins, I hope these simple reminders help you step into the season with a little more grace and a lot less pressure.
And if we’re being honest, most of us moms are living somewhere between winging it and saying a prayer anyway.
So take a deep breath. Give yourself plenty of grace. You’re doing better than you think.
You’ve got this, Mama.
