Fall has a way of filling up the calendar quickly.
One minute, you’re looking forward to cooler weather and pumpkin patches, and the next, your afternoons are a blur of soccer practice, football games, dance lessons, cheer, baseball, school activities, homework, dinner and trying to remember which kid needs to be where… and when.
If you’re a mom in the world of kids’ activities right now, you know.
There are uniforms to wash, water bottles to fill, snacks to pack and cleats that somehow disappear five minutes before it’s time to leave. There are practices squeezed between school and dinner, weeknights spent on the sidelines and weekends that suddenly have very little “weekend” left in them.
It can be a lot.
But somewhere in all that rushing around, there are some pretty sweet moments happening, too.
It’s watching your child run onto the field and immediately look toward the sidelines to make sure you’re there. It’s the giant smile after they do something they’ve been practicing for weeks. It’s cheering for a goal, a touchdown, a hit, a routine or simply the fact that they got back up and tried again.
And sometimes, it’s the car ride home when they tell you every single detail of what just happened, even though you watched the whole thing.
Those are the moments tucked inside the busy.
As moms, it’s easy to feel like we should be doing more. Maybe dinner wasn’t homemade. Maybe the laundry is still sitting in a basket. Maybe you forgot the team snack until the very last minute or everyone ate in the car on the way to practice.
That’s okay.
Our kids don’t need us to make every season picture-perfect. They need us there.
They need the clapping from the sidelines. The “I saw that!” when they look over. The hug after a tough game. The encouragement when they’re learning something new. The reminder that we’re proud of them whether they win, lose, score or spend half the game picking grass.
One day, the cleats by the door will be gone. The folding chairs will stay folded. Our calendars won’t be quite so full, and we might even miss the evenings spent rushing out the door with a granola bar in one hand and a water bottle in the other.
So in this busy fall season, give yourself a little grace.
You don’t have to juggle it all perfectly. You don’t have to make every moment magical.
Just keep showing up.
Because to them, seeing you on the sidelines might already be the best part.
