Before I give any tips for work from home, I feel the need to be completely transparent. These tips come from a very imperfect mother… A mom who sometimes lets her boys sit and watch their favorite cartoons, like Scooby Doo, Tom & Jerry, and Rugrats. Sometimes I may even let them drag every toy known to man out to the living room, trashing the living room floor, just so they can play and be occupied with something. I’ve also been witness to some of the most incredible blanket forts known to kids worldwide.

Family, according to one definition in the dictionary, means a person or people related to one and so to be treated with a special loyalty or intimacy.
Family can love you and hurt you all in the same sentence. Family can make you crazy (or make you feel like you’re going crazy). Family can also have your back. That special loyalty really does exist in families who put each other first.

Halloween will soon be here! We recently shared all sorts of ideas for inexpensive and easy to make Halloween costumes for kids. Of course, they’ll also need a Halloween pail to hold all those yummy treats they’ll get while trick-or-treating.

My kids have often said that next to Christmas, Halloween is their favorite day of the year. We like to call it a holiday because to them, it really is. They’ve always looked forward to Halloween and what they’re going to be, trick-or-treating, and of course, all the candy. When it comes to Halloween costumes, sometimes we’ve made them and sometimes we’ve bought them. More often than not, we’ve kept it fairly simple and made the costumes.

Having a baby is a major life event and definitely one to celebrate. Having had 3 of my own, I’ve been in different scenarios with each and every one. I’ve lived close to family and then far away from family. I’ve felt a range of emotions that, I’m sure, every mom feels in that postpartum time of life. Thankfully, I’ve been given the gift of a husband (and best friend) who’s been there to support me physically, mentally, and emotionally through all of it.

We see the horrifying stories on the news, we hear of the Amber Alerts, some help search, and some, unfortunately, wait 27 years to find out the truth of what happened when their child was abducted. This Saturday, Oct. 1, there will be a coast-to-coast bubble blowing to draw attention to missing and exploited children around the world and to honor one sweet angel, Jacob Wetterling.

Last spring, our oldest boy celebrated his 14th birthday. 14 years! There’s something about that magical number that made me kinda take a step back. When you think about it, it’s only 4 more years until he’s 18. He only has 4 years of school left. That’s 4 more summers. In 4 years, he could potentially be out on his own, making his own way in this world. Holy mackerel, where has the time gone? All of these things and more have gone through my head since that day last spring when my oldest baby turned 14.

Planning our family’s meals is one chore that’s right up there with cleaning the bathroom… It’s one of those necessary chores I just can’t let myself skip. Without adequate meal planning, we’re more likely to open up the fridge, say nothing sounds good, and order out. Both our health and our wallet take the brunt of not having a good meal plan. Meal planning not only saves time and money, but it also leads to healthier, more nutritious meals.

It’s almost 2 a.m. as I roll into bed and close my eyes. Before I know it, the sun’s up, the baby’s whimpering, kids are stirring, and it’s time to start another day. I juggle responsibilities, hanging precariously onto this balancing act called life. All too quickly, it’s time for baths and bedtime, afterward being intense and focused work time for me. Before I know it, my day’s ended, I’m rolling back into bed, and I haven’t really done anything just for me.

Not that long ago, we were expecting our third child. We’d saved a few things from our older boys, but quite a few of our bigger necessities were either outdated or had aged poorly while stored away. I knew, from previous pregnancies, not to go overboard when purchasing all the basic necessities for a baby. It’s so easy to do, though, isn’t it?
