3 Small Ways a Mom Like You Can Change the World

All moms like to look good. And we like our children to look good too! Try walking through the Target baby section and not drooling over an adorable ruffly little girl’s outfit on the clearance rack. Baby boys are fun to dress too with bowties and statement tees.

Fashion for our kids and for ourselves can be a lot of fun.

But did you know?

Fashion is the second most polluting industry in the world? Second only to oil, according to ThredUp.com.  Obviously fashion helps us express who we are. The self-expression is a huge part of why we love it.

But there’s more we need to express than our own personalities. We need to start expressing some serious awareness of the effects our love of fashion has on our world.

Every year we throw 26 billion pounds of clothes into landfills. That’s a lot of fashion turned trash.

As cute as it may be, a single cotton t-shirt takes 700 gallons of water to make. T-shirts are great and all but being aware of more than the financial cost of our choices is being earth conscious in a fashionable way.

What can you do about it?

We don’t all have to do it perfectly. But if we all commit to one small thing, we can each impact the world. So in 2020, we’re asking you to choose used.

It’s easy really. When we ask you to reduce and reuse gently used fashion, it’s a win for you and a win for our world.

1. Reduce.

It’s quite likely that you and your child have two closets full of clothes that only a handful of pieces regularly get worn. It’s okay. That’s most of us in the US.

Instead of purging Marie Kondo style and unloading bags at the local thrift shop, know what happens to your recycled fashion. Unfortunately, the majority of donations end up quantifying a large portion of the 26 billion landfill pounds. You meant well. But there are ways to follow through on what you reduce so others can reuse.

2. Reuse.

Shop secondhand first. Let’s be honest. Most clothes found at secondhand shops look as good as they did the first time around. Back to those closets that are full of clothes we rarely wear… So when we decide to refresh and reduce, those purged pieces are in tip-top shape. Don’t be afraid to save your pocketbook and your world with your next shopping trip. Shop consignment for you and your family.
