8 Simple, Yummy Summer Snacks for Kids
By The Women Bloggers member Mel Lockcuff of AdventuresofMel.
Summer doesn’t just mean warm weather. For kids the world over, summer means time off school, days spent outdoors, hours spent in the pool, and more.
As a parent, I know all those extra energy-burning summer activities lead to monstrously hungry appetites. There are days I’ll walk in my kitchen and every single cabinet door is open, I kid you not. Usually, that’s a sign my middle child (the snack lover in our house) has been searching for his next yummy snack, meaning it’s a must for me to keep healthier snacks on hand. Snacks don’t just mean cookies, candy, chips, and crackers. You can still get creative with snacks but keep it simple at the same time. There are so many easy options, especially for summer when lots of fruits and veggies are in season.
Below are 8 ideas for simple, yummy, summer snacks kids will truly enjoy. They’ve been taste tested and approved by my boys, so they’re a definite go when it comes to snack options you can keep on hand.
1. Ants on a Log
Ants on a Log are as simple as spreading peanut butter on 4-5 inch sticks of celery and topping them off with raisins. They’re healthy, simple, and fun to eat!
2, Fruit Salad
Remember the old Wiggles song Fruit Salad? There’s a reason they made a song out of such a fun snack. Kids love it. Add melon, bananas, grapes, bananas, berries, pineapple… Pick your favorite fruits. Instead of using a bowl, you could even place your fruit salad in a watermelon shell.
3. Naturally Red, White and Blue Freezer Pops
Using strawberries, blueberries, and Greek yogurt, you can make naturally colorful freezer pops that are also perfect for the 4th of July. Grab the printable recipe!
4. Frozen Blueberries, Grapes, or Bananas
Did you know that some fresh fruits make the very best frozen treats all by themselves? Frozen blueberries, grapes, and bananas are amongst some of our faves. My hubby loves frozen strawberries too. Just be mindful that small berries and grapes may not be suitable for younger kids, as they can present a choking hazard.
5. Mandarin Peach Frozen Fruit Pops
Peaches, banana, mandarin oranges, and Greek yogurt come together in another fantastic frozen treat kids will love. Grab the printable recipe! I love making my own freezer pops because for one, we can make whatever kind we want, and it doesn’t take much to make a batch of 10 pops; another reason is we don’t have to worry about a bunch of artificial colors or yucky ingredients. I’ll usually make a big batch with my freezer pop mold, then take them all out and store in a gallon-sized Ziploc bag in the freezer. That way the kids can just grab a pop when they want one.
6. Pizza Bites
Have you ever tried making your own pizza bites? Skip the frozen food aisle, and make your own with this printable recipe. Filled with pepperoni, mozzarella, and sauce, they’re a scrumptious snack the whole family will love.
7. Easy Strawberry Kiwi FroYo Pops
Love sour treats? My oldest is a fan of all things sour, so these 2-ingredient FroYo Pops are the best! Kiwi and Greek yogurt… That’s all it takes to make a batch. Grab the printable recipe!
8. Strawberry Lemonade Ice Pops
Ice pops are the BEST on a hot summer day, especially when they’re made with chunked up strawberries and lemonade. Yummy and refreshing… Grab the printable recipe!
